Himachal Pradesh is home to some spectacular mountain
passes, but many of them demand considerable trekking experience. Routes such
as Pin Bhaba, Rupin, Buran, Borasu and Kugti can involve challenging terrain,
steep climbs and demanding conditions. Even the relatively popular Hampta Pass
has sections that can test beginners, particularly around river crossings and
rough terrain.
For those looking for a gentler introduction to
high-altitude pass trekking, Chandrakhani Pass is an excellent choice.
Situated above the Kullu Valley, the pass connects the Beas and Parvati valleys
and has historically been used by local shepherds and traders. Its cultural
importance, beautiful landscapes and manageable terrain make it one of the more
accessible pass treks in Himachal.
What Makes Chandrakhani Pass Special?
The adventure begins at Rumsu, a short drive from
Manali. Almost immediately, the trail enters a beautiful Himalayan forest
filled with pine, deodar, oak, maple and rhododendron trees. The changing
vegetation keeps the route interesting as you gradually gain altitude.
Higher up, the dense forest opens into broad alpine meadows.
From these open sections, trekkers can enjoy views of several prominent
Himalayan peaks, including Hanuman Tibba, Friendship Peak, Indrasan and
Shikar Beh.
One of the most memorable parts of the journey comes near Chaklani,
where the trail approaches the pass along a roughly 2-km ridge. With mountain
ranges visible on either side, this section delivers the sense of adventure
that makes high-altitude trekking so rewarding.
Highlights of the Chandrakhani Pass Trek
Convenient Access From Manali
Getting to the starting point is relatively simple. Rumsu is
around an hour's drive from Manali, eliminating the long approach journeys
associated with many Himalayan pass treks. This makes the trek particularly
convenient for first-time trekkers.
Changing Himalayan Forests
The initial trail passes through cool, dense woodland. Pine,
deodar, maple and oak dominate the lower sections, while rhododendrons become
increasingly noticeable higher up.
The forest is especially attractive during the flowering
season, when patches of colour appear along the trail. The descent also brings
trekkers back through these peaceful wooded sections.
Impressive Himalayan Panoramas
Mountain views gradually become more expansive as the trail
climbs above the tree line. On clear days, the landscape opens towards the
Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges.
The ridge leading towards the pass is particularly
rewarding. Walking with expansive valleys and snow-covered peaks on both sides
gives the summit approach a dramatic Himalayan character.
Meadows and Open Camping Spots
Unlike routes dominated by rocky terrain, Chandrakhani has several broad grassy sections where trekkers
Day 1: Arrival in Manali & Drive to Rumsu Village
Pickup: 9:30 am | Drive: 29 km | Time: 1.5–2 hrs | Altitude: 1,950 m to 2,100 m
Your Chandrakhani Pass Trek begins with your arrival in Manali. After a morning pickup, drive towards Rumsu Village, a traditional mountain settlement and the starting point of the trek.
The drive takes you through the scenic landscapes of the Kullu Valley, with beautiful mountain views along the route. On reaching Rumsu, settle into the campsite and take some time to relax.
Use the rest of the day to prepare for the trek ahead. Keep your backpack ready, stay hydrated and get adequate rest before the first trekking day.
Day 2: Rumsu to Naya Tapru – Forest Ascent
Trek: 4–5 km | Time: 3–4 hrs | Altitude: 2,100 m to 3,200 m
After breakfast, begin your trek from Rumsu. The trail gradually climbs through a beautiful Himalayan forest filled with pine, deodar, oak and maple trees.
The steady ascent makes this an endurance-oriented day, as you gain significant altitude in a relatively short distance. Take regular breaks and maintain a comfortable pace rather than rushing uphill.
As the trail climbs higher, the dense forest begins to open into spacious meadows. The changing landscape provides the first glimpses of the high-altitude environment that Chandrakhani Pass is known for.
Reach Naya Tapru, a scenic meadow surrounded by mountain landscapes. Spend the evening relaxing at camp and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
Day 3: Naya Tapru to Chaklani Camp – Into the Alpine Meadows
Trek: 2 km | Time: 2.5–3 hrs | Altitude: 3,200 m to 3,400 m
Begin the day with a relatively short but scenic trek towards Chaklani Camp. The landscape becomes increasingly open as you leave the lower forest sections behind.
The trail passes through alpine meadows and high-altitude grasslands, offering expansive views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges. Depending on the season, you may also encounter colourful wildflowers along the route.
Since the day's distance is short, there is plenty of time to explore the surroundings and acclimatise to the increasing altitude. Spend the evening at Chaklani, preparing for the summit day ahead.
Day 4: Chaklani to Chandrakhani Pass & Back to Naya Tapru
Trek: 8 km total | Time: 6–8 hrs | Altitude: 3,400 m → 3,700 m → 3,200 m
This is the most exciting day of the Chandrakhani Pass Trek. Start early from Chaklani and make your way towards the pass.
The climb is gradual, but the higher altitude and changing trail conditions make it important to maintain a steady pace. During the early season, snow may remain on sections of the trail.
The final approach includes a spectacular ridge walk. As you move towards Chandrakhani Pass, the landscape opens up on both sides, offering impressive views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges and prominent peaks.
After spending some time at the pass and taking in the panoramic views, begin the descent towards Naya Tapru. The return journey brings you back through the high meadows and eventually to your campsite.
Day 5: Naya Tapru to Rumsu & Drive Back to Manali
Trek: 4–5 km | Time: Approx. 3 hrs | Drive: 29 km | Altitude: 3,200 m to 1,950 m
After breakfast, begin your final descent towards Rumsu. The trail takes you back through the forest sections you crossed earlier in the trek.
Enjoy the last views of the mountains and forests before reaching Rumsu Village. From here, board your vehicle for the drive back to Manali.
On reaching Manali, your Chandrakhani Pass Trek with Himalayn Advent comes to an end, leaving you with memorable experiences of Himalayan forests, alpine meadows and a spectacular high-altitude pass.

Chandrakhani Pass Trek: A Beginner-Friendly High-Altitude Adventure
Difficulty Level
The Chandrakhani Pass Trek is considered a moderate-level Himalayan trek. Although the trail does not involve highly technical climbing, trekkers should be prepared for sustained ascents, descents and uneven mountain paths.
The route takes you from the lower forests around Rumsu to high-altitude meadows and finally towards Chandrakhani Pass. The change in elevation is significant, so physical fitness and proper acclimatisation are important.
Terrain
The trek begins with a steady climb through the forests above Rumsu. The trail continues to gain elevation for several kilometres before opening into expansive alpine meadows. While there are no long technical rock sections, the continuous ascent can be physically demanding.
The approach towards Chandrakhani Pass is generally gradual, but snow can remain on higher sections during the early trekking season. The ridge section near the pass requires careful footing, particularly when the trail is covered with snow, wet or slippery.
Uneven ground, loose sections and changing trail conditions are part of the Himalayan experience. Trekkers should maintain a steady pace and follow the instructions of the trek team throughout the route.
At Himalayn Advent, our trek leaders and support team provide guidance on challenging sections and help trekkers navigate changing terrain safely. Necessary safety equipment is carried depending on the season and prevailing trail conditions.
Weather Conditions
Mountain weather can change rapidly, and conditions around Chandrakhani Pass may be very different from those in Manali.
Rain can make forest trails muddy and slippery, while prolonged showers may cause water to accumulate on sections of the trail. During the colder months, snowfall can cover existing paths and make the higher stretches more demanding.
Temperatures at higher camps can fall considerably, particularly at night. Strong winds can also make conditions feel much colder than the actual temperature. Proper layering, waterproof clothing and suitable trekking footwear are therefore essential.
The Himalayn Advent team keeps a close watch on weather and trail conditions. If conditions become unsafe, the trek itinerary may be modified or a particular section may be skipped. Safety always takes priority over reaching the planned destination.
Altitude
Altitude is one of the main factors to consider on the Chandrakhani Pass Trek. The route climbs considerably from Rumsu towards the high meadows and eventually reaches an altitude of around 12,000 ft.
As elevation increases, the air becomes thinner and the body needs time to adjust. Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can affect both beginners and experienced trekkers, regardless of fitness level.
Common warning signs include headache, nausea, unusual tiredness, dizziness and loss of appetite. Trekkers should report any concerning symptoms to the trek leader rather than attempting to push through them.
Staying hydrated, maintaining a comfortable pace, eating properly and following the acclimatisation schedule can help the body adapt to altitude.
Emergency Exits
Because Chandrakhani Pass is a high-altitude mountain route, evacuation options can be limited once you are deep into the trek. In an emergency, the safest course of action is generally to descend towards the accessible side of the trail and proceed towards Manali.
The exact evacuation route depends on the location of the trekker, weather, trail conditions and the nature of the emergency. The trek team will coordinate the safest possible response based on the circumstances.
Medical Assistance
Manali is the nearest major town for medical assistance and serves as the primary medical hub for trekkers undertaking the Chandrakhani Pass route. For serious emergencies requiring advanced treatment, further evacuation to a larger medical centre may be necessary.
Himalayn Advent carries appropriate first-aid and emergency supplies for the trek and maintains safety protocols for dealing with altitude-related and trail-related situations.
Safety Responsibility
A safe Himalayan trek is a shared responsibility. Our team takes every reasonable precaution, but trekkers must also follow instructions, maintain appropriate pacing, stay with the group and communicate any health or discomfort immediately.
With the right preparation, suitable clothing and a responsible approach to altitude, Chandrakhani Pass can be an excellent introduction to high-altitude trekking in Himachal Pradesh.
Best Time to Visit Chandrakhani Pass
The best time for the Chandrakhani Pass Trek is from May to September, with mid-July to August being ideal for trekkers who want to see lush green meadows and colourful Himalayan wildflowers. September is especially good for clearer skies, pleasant daytime temperatures and stunning mountain views.
May–June: Snow can still be found around the higher sections and near the pass. Expect chilly nights and winter-like conditions at altitude.
July–August: The landscape turns vibrant green, with wildflowers covering the meadows. Occasional rain and cloudy skies are common during the monsoon.
September: One of the most rewarding months, with clearer weather, autumn colours and excellent views of the surrounding peaks.
Trekking beyond September becomes colder, with temperatures dropping sharply at night and early winter conditions beginning to appear. For a comfortable and scenic experience, Himalayn Advent recommends planning your Chandrakhani Pass trek between May and September, depending on whether you prefer snow, monsoon greenery or clear autumn views.
