The Hampta Pass with Chandratal Lake Trek is one of
the most beautiful and diverse Himalayan trekking experiences in Himachal
Pradesh. Known for its dramatic landscape changes, this trek takes you from the
lush green valleys of Kullu to the rugged and barren mountains of Lahaul and
Spiti. Within just a few days, trekkers witness forests, waterfalls, alpine
meadows, snow-covered trails, high mountain passes, and the stunning beauty of
Chandratal Lake.
Located at an altitude of approximately 14,100 ft,
Hampta Pass is a perfect choice for trekkers who want to experience a
high-altitude Himalayan adventure without an extremely long or technical
expedition. The trek offers a perfect balance of challenge, natural beauty, and
unforgettable mountain experiences.
The journey begins from the beautiful town of Manali, which
acts as the gateway to this Himalayan adventure. From Manali, the route moves
towards Jobra, the starting point of the trek. As soon as the trail begins, the
scenery starts changing rapidly. Dense forests of pine and maple trees welcome
trekkers before opening into wide green meadows surrounded by towering mountain
peaks.
One of the biggest attractions of the Hampta Pass Trek
is the incredible transformation of landscapes. The Kullu side of the trek is
filled with greenery, flowing streams, colorful flowers, and peaceful valleys.
As trekkers cross Hampta Pass, the scenery changes completely and reveals the
dramatic landscapes of Lahaul Valley, where Rocky Mountains, glaciers, and vast
open spaces create a completely different world.
The trail offers a variety of experiences throughout the
journey. Trekkers walk alongside rivers, cross mountain streams, pass through
beautiful campsites, and climb through high-altitude terrain. Every section of
the trek brings a new view, making it one of the most rewarding short-duration
treks in India.
The campsites on the Hampta Pass Trek are among the
highlights of the journey. Places like Chika, Balu Ka Ghera, and Shea Goru
offer incredible mountain views and peaceful surroundings. Spending nights
under clear Himalayan skies, surrounded by peaks and valleys, creates memories
that stay with trekkers long after the journey ends.
The most thrilling part of the trek is the climb from Balu
Ka Ghera to Hampta Pass. This section involves a gradual but challenging ascent
through rocky terrain, snow patches, and high-altitude landscapes. Reaching the
top of Hampta Pass at around 14,100 ft is a rewarding experience,
offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges.
After crossing the pass, the landscape changes dramatically
as trekkers enter the Lahaul region. The green valley’s disappear and are
replaced by the raw beauty of the cold desert mountains. This sudden change in
scenery is what makes the Hampta Pass Trek unique compared to many other
Himalayan treks.
The adventure continues with a visit to the famous Chandratal
Lake, also known as the "Moon Lake." Located at a high altitude,
Chandratal is famous for its crystal-clear blue waters and stunning reflections
of the surrounding mountains. Visiting this beautiful lake adds an extra
magical element to the trek and makes the Hampta Pass with Chandratal Lake Trek
even more special.
The trek is considered a moderate-level Himalayan trek
and is suitable for beginners with good fitness as well as experienced
trekkers. The route includes steep climbs, river crossings, uneven trails, and
altitude gain, so proper preparation is important. Regular walking, cardio
exercises, and strength training before the trek help trekkers enjoy the
journey comfortably.
The best time to do the Hampta Pass Trek with Chandratal
Lake is from June to September. During this period, trekkers can experience
pleasant weather, snow patches in higher sections, green valleys, and clear
mountain views. Each month offers a different experience, from snowy landscapes

The ideal trekking window for this adventure is from June to September, when the trail offers the perfect combination of pleasant weather, changing landscapes, snow patches, green valleys, and accessible routes.
Although the trek can sometimes be attempted in late May or extended into early October, conditions during these months can be more challenging due to heavy snow, colder temperatures, or unpredictable weather. Each month brings a different experience, so choosing the right season depends on the kind of landscape and adventure you are looking for.

Difficulty Level of Hampta Pass Trek
The Hampta Pass Trek is classified as a moderate-level
Himalayan trek, making it an excellent choice for adventurous beginners as
well as experienced trekkers looking for a rewarding mountain experience.
Covering approximately 26 km over five trekking days, the trek takes you
through dense forests, alpine meadows, river crossings, rocky terrain, and a
high-altitude mountain pass at 14,065 ft.
While Hampta Pass is often recommended for first-time
trekkers, it should not be underestimated. The trail presents a variety of
challenges that require a reasonable level of fitness, endurance, and mental
preparedness.
Terrain Challenges
One of the most exciting aspects of the Hampta Pass Trek is the diversity of its terrain. The journey begins through beautiful pine forests and lush green valleys before gradually transitioning into rugged mountain landscapes.
Trekkers will encounter narrow mountain trails, rocky paths, glacier-fed streams, and sections of moraine terrain. During the monsoon season, some trails can become muddy and slippery, requiring extra caution while walking.
River crossings are among the most adventurous sections of the trek. Depending on the season and water levels, trekkers may need to cross fast-flowing streams using wooden bridges, snow bridges, or guided river crossings. These sections add excitement to the trek while demanding careful footing and teamwork.
The Pass Crossing
The most challenging day of the trek is the ascent to Hampta Pass. The route involves a steady climb through high-altitude terrain, crossing boulder fields, ridgelines, and snow-covered sections during early summer.
As you gain elevation, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, and the thinner mountain air can make the climb more demanding. However, the breathtaking views from the pass make every step worthwhile.
After reaching the summit, trekkers face a steep descent towards the Lahaul Valley. This section requires concentration and balance, especially during wet or snowy conditions.
Weather
Weather plays a significant role in the overall difficulty of the Hampta Pass Trek. During June, snow patches are commonly found on the higher sections of the trail. In July and August, rainfall can make the route slippery and increase water levels in streams and river crossings.
Mountain weather can change rapidly, so trekkers should always be prepared for cold temperatures, rain, strong winds, and occasional snowfall at higher elevations.
Altitude
At an altitude of 14,065 ft, Hampta Pass enters the high-altitude zone where trekkers may experience symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Although the itinerary is designed to allow gradual acclimatization, proper hydration, adequate rest, and maintaining a steady pace are essential throughout the trek.
Even physically fit trekkers can experience altitude-related issues, making it important to follow the guidance of trek leaders and support staff.
Fitness Requirements
To comfortably complete the Hampta Pass Trek, participants should have a good level of cardiovascular fitness and stamina. Activities such as jogging, hiking, cycling, swimming, stair climbing, and strength training are highly recommended for at least 4–6 weeks before the trek.
Being physically prepared will help you enjoy the trek more and reduce fatigue during long trekking days.

Our experienced trek leaders and mountain guides are trained to handle changing mountain conditions and altitude-related challenges.
